Ernesto Olmedo, MD

2008 Residency Graduate

Dr. Olmedo was born in Arequipa, Peru. He has an undergraduate degree in engineering from Universidad Nacional de San Agustin, Arequipa, and his prior profession in the United States as as an engineer. He entered Duke University for his MBA, and as a volunteer he became involved in foreign medical missions, where he got the "bug" for medicine. He left a secure work environment to venture into medical school. After 3 years at UNC-Chapel Hill as an undergraduate, he entered the UNC School of Medicine.

"I was attracted to Duke because of its reputation as a world class institution, where one can get the best training in medicine. At Duke I have trained under some of the best specialists in the world. I had the chance to follow my own interests, including a month rotation in a Peruvian hospital for the indigent."

With the redesign of the residency program he believes we are at the cutting edge, leading the future of Family Medicine. The work in the community sites gives him the satisfaction to help the underserved, many of them migrants. Intellectually, he is challenged with the research requirement, as well as to the opportunity to participate in Duke's clinical leadership program. He is excited about the future of the residency program as they lead the way in Family Medicine.
