Director's Statement

Dear Prospective Resident,

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website. As you review our website you should find plenty of information about our new and innovative Family Medicine Residency training program. We are very proud of our innovative Duke program, our faculty and our residents.

This past year has been a time of introspection and curricular development. We did not recruit an intern class this past year to afford us the opportunity to design a curriculum that both met the Residency Review Committee Requirements to train Family Medicine physicians, and that enables us to innovate, and develop new models of training Family Medicine residents for the future. Our program's main focus will be in producing residents who will be experts in ambulatory care and whose future practice is anticipated to be an urban/ sub-urban practice. Our curricular emphasizes the following 5 pillars:

  • Team based care
  • Chronic disease management
  • Community engagement
  • Leadership skills
  • Quality measurement and improvement

Most of the mandatory inpatient months of training will occur in the first year of residency, while most of the second and third years of training will consist of outpatient experiences, and near-daily continuity clinic sessions in our Family Medicine Center. Beginning in the second year, each resident will begin a longitudinal clinical experience in a collaborative community based training site.

Leadership skills will be honed during the third year by participating in our Certificate of Clinical Leadership Certificate Program, an innovative program administered by our department. A fourth-year fellowship is available for residents who wish to continue developing their leadership skills, which will culminate in a Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Leadership.

The recent changes to our Family Medicine Residency Program were not made in isolation. Our new program reflects national, regional, and institutional goals of producing physicians who provide high quality medical care to their patients and their communities. Our Family Medicine Residency Program and redesigned Family Medicine Center are part of the process in discovering better ways to improve health of patients and their communities, while reducing health care disparities.

I believe that it is a very exciting time to be in health care, a very exciting time to be a Family Doctor, and a very exciting time here at Duke Family Medicine! Please explore our website where I believe that many of your questions about us will be answered. Feel free to contact our program, should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Brian Halstater, MD
