Viviana Martinez-Bianchi, MD

Associate Program Director

Dr. Martinez-Bianchi is the Associate Program Director of the Residency Program. She joined the faculty in August 2006, after doing a Faculty Development Fellowship with Emphasis in Caring for Minorities and Underserved Populations at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio.

Martinez-Bianchi graduated from the National University of Rosario, Argentina in 1990 and from the University of Iowa Family Practice Residency in 1996. She practiced in a rural/ industrial town in Iowa for 5 years before joining the faculty at the Genesis Family Medicine Residency in Davenport, Iowa. She loves teaching, and in 2000 she received the Alpha Omega Alpha Volunteer Faculty Award from the students at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Her leadership activities have included the University of Iowa's College of Medicine Alumni Board of Advisors, the Board of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, being a Delegate for Minority Physicians to the AAFP's Congress of Delegates and the Convener of the National Conference of Special Constituencies. She currently chairs the Health Disparities Council of the NCAFP, and is a member of the Commission on Membership and Member Services of the AAFP.

When asked about working at Duke she said: "It has been a wonderful experience to be a member of the team charged to re-develop the residency program. Duke has provided us with enormous resources. Residents will not only learn to provide excellent health care to their patients, they will also learn to develop programs in collaboration with the community. This is Leadership".

She enjoys sailing, traveling, swimming, and gardening with her husband and her son. She enjoys Opera, Salsa, Tango, the North Carolina Symphony and the Carolina Ballet. She loves cooking and she makes a wicked chimichurri sauce for her Argentinean style carne asada. She has been working on a North Carolina accent with little success.

"While family medicine and primary care in general already attracts like-minded individuals who seek to better the lives of those around them, this program in particular has shown a commitment to serving the community."
